Making a Draw String Bag - Style #2
Copyright 2004 by James P. Riser
The first style of draw string bag utilized only one
string. This bag uses two strings for closing the bag.
Dimensions are not given since this bag will need to
be made in various sizes to meet the needs of the object it is
to contain.
The fabric needs to be cut with the corners trimmed
like this.
If the corners are not trimmed,
the bag will flare out at the top as shown here.
The ends are folded over to form a hem. This may be
pinned or clamped as shown here.
These two ends are next stitched
to forn the hems for the draw strings.
The sewn ends look now like this.
Next the sides are clamped or
pinned.
It is a good idea to hold the thread end when starting
the stitch to prevent puckering of the material. I like to backstitch
at both ends of these seams.
The bag will now look like this.
I use a folded wire to thread the strings through the
hem.
I push the wire loop end through the hem, thread the
string, then pull the wire drawing the string with it. The strings
go in one hem then through the second hem and are knotted on the
ends.
The finished draw strings look
like this.
The bag is turned right side out
and it is finished.
