Mail theft is on the rise and I wanted to make a security mailbox for collecting our mail for extended periods - in case we wanted to make a quick trip to Vegas or LA. Several people have asked to see this mailbox so I quickly put together this web page to share the idea with others.
I had a supply of 1/16" thick steel sheet from an earlier project and decided to use this steel as the main part of the new mailbox.
The angle steel on the corners is 1/8" thick stock.
The box is bolted down to a 6 cubic foot slab of concrete.
All cutting of steel was done with my plasma cutter - except for the critical 45 degree cuts on the steel frames for the house numbers. They were cut with my horizontal bandsaw.
All box frame welding was done with my Lincoln 125 plus MIG unit.
I made the door so that when opened, a steel flap moves with it to cover any collected mail - like on a big blue official post office mailbox.
The mail is deposited onto this flap and falls down into the collection basket below when the door is closed.
The door is one layer of steel and the flap is a second layer that was spot welded onto the back side of the door. I used a Harbor Freight 220v. spot welder for this task. It was easily up to the task.
